The Official Kauai Travel Planner (for free copy call 1-800-262-1400) is also a great reference for property listings of all types and has a listing of real estate agent companies who manage various vacation rental units, including homes. BEACH AND WEATHER QUESTIONS:

Q: I heard there is a water safety brochure for Kauai. Where can I get a copy?
A: Some hotels have the water safety brochures in their rooms. You may also pick up a copy at the Kauai Visitors Bureau office. Visitors are also encouraged to visit the Kauai Beach Explorer Project website which includes water safety information and current conditions.
Q: Is there a website where I can find the current ocean conditions?

Q: If a seal is on the beach - is it sick? Should I call someone?
A: Not necessarily. Hawaiian Monk Seals often haul up on beaches to sleep, sun or give birth. These critically endangered marine mammals are protected under federal laws. Stay at least 100 feet from them, and remember an agitated 400- to 600-pound wild animal could be dangerous. For more information about monk seals visit the Kauai Monk Seal Watch Program website at www.kauaimonkseal.com.
Q: Where can I take surfing lessons?
A: Please visit the Surfing on Kauai section under Activities. Also, check the yellow pages under "Surfing Instruction."
Q: It's raining today...what activities are available for rainy days?
A: There is the Kauai Museum, shopping at the various shopping malls (Poipu Shopping Village, Kukui Grove Shopping Center, Coconut Plantation Marketplace, Kilohana), or catch a movie at either the Coconut Plantation Marketplace or the Kukui Grove Cinemas. Some hotel properties have hands on craft activities such as lei making. Check with the concierge upon check in.
Q: What is the weather/temperature going to be like during my stay?
A: Please know that weather conditions on Kauai can change frequently. The weather can vary dramatically from one part of the island to another on the same day. Often it may be sunny in one part of the island while raining on another.
Q: I hear that Kauai has the most rain... will it rain when I visit?
A: While Kauai might average a little more rain in general than the other islands, this is the reason why Kauai is so lush and green and has the nickname "The Garden Island." In general, we have wonderful weather year round and unless there is a weather system over the island, you can always find sunshine while visiting. The early mornings sometimes bring passing showers, but the skies clear as the day goes by. There is a little more rain during the "winter months," which is true for all the islands. Kauai actually has seven distinct micro climates; including desert-like conditions on the west side, to semi-arid tropical weather at the beach resorts, to cool mountain forests above Waimea Canyon, to pastoral plains on the upper east side to tropical rain forests in the interior. While rainfall tables amount to somewhere between 20 and 40 inches a year in most of the populated sections, the center of the island is considered one of the wettest spots on earth. Kauai's location in the northern pacific, along with its extraordinary mountain formations create this fascinating variety in climate conditions. We suggest you access our weather page to research rainfall tables for Kauai.
Q: What part of the island is the driest/sunniest?
A: The South Shore, Poipu especially, is the best bet for visitors who desire maximum sunshine, the Westside tends to be the driest, especially towards Kekaha, Mana and Polihale However, for most visitors there is plenty of sunshine available in all coastal visitor areas island-wide.
Q: I'm staying in Poipu...what is the ocean condition like on the North Shore?
A: The visitors on island often wonder what ocean and weather conditions are like at various spots on the island in order to determine where or what they should do for that day. It is best to listen to the local radio stations and local TV news to see what's happening with the weather and ocean. There is also a water safety brochure available at the Kauai Visitors Bureau office or you cancheck with your hotel, travel agent or concierge, or visit kauaiexplorer.com for surf updates.
Q: I heard Kauai has a nude beach. Where is it?
A: There are no legal nude beaches on Kauai or in the State of Hawai'i. The Kauai Police Department does cite those in violation of the law.
Q: Can you tell me which beaches have lifeguards?
A: The following beaches have lifeguards: Kekaha Beach Salt Pond Poipu Beach Park Lydgate Kealia Hanalei Bay Haena Beach Park Kee Beach For more information, please visit www.kauaiexplorer.com.

A: Please call the State Parks office at 808-274-3444 where you may obtain a hiking and camping permit for the State parks (Kalalau and Koke'e). If you are interested in obtaining a camping permit in one of the County parks, please call the County Parks office at 808-241-4463.
Q: We plan to hike and camp and we found out that the bus does not allow backpacks...what form of transportation is available?
A: Backpacks can be no larger than 10" X 17" X 30 to be carried onto the bus, which is usually too small for those wishing to camp while visiting the island. Taxi service is available on island, but it can be expensive if you need to be transported from Lihue to Haena, or Lihue to Kokee. Currently and unfortunately, there is no other means of transportation for backpackers, unless they rent a vehicle. If campers rent a car, we advise them to leave nothing in the car and be sure to lock the vehicle. Practice the same safety precautions as you would at any other destination.
