View from the Awaawapuhi Trail, Kokee State Park, Kauai, Hawaii

Kokee State Park is spread over 4,345 acres on a high plateau covered in forest, sprinkled with wild flowers and crisscrossed with hiking trails. The lodge oversees 12 bare bones housekeeping cabins and dispenses wood, lunch and sundries. The Kokee Natural Museum, next to the lodge, is a must-stop shop for information about the park and the trails. Kokee is a world apart from the island below. No more than 20 miles from Waimea, the temperature drops as you climb the mountain. Temperatures range from 45 degrees in January to 68 degrees in July with annual rainfall of about 70 inches.
