Wailua Falls is a step off the beaten path. Located at the south end of Wailua River, it cascades in two streams to a spot at least 80 feet below. Some say the distance is more accurately described as 200 feet. It is said that early Hawaiians jumped from the falls to prove their manhood. Like other spectacular views on Kauai, Wailua Falls has been captured on film for thousands of people who have never seen them in person. In this case, the Falls appeared in the opening credits of the long-running television show, "Fantasy Island." To get there, take Highway 56 from Kapaa to Hanamaulu, just outside Lihue. Follow Maalo Road in Hanamaulu. Travel uphill for about three miles.
