Kilauea Lighthouse on Kauai's North Shore

On the North Shore greens get greener, vegetation becomes denser, and the space between population centers grows wider. Kilauea is a close-knit village that is home to one of the island's most frequented attractions. The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary for nesting seabirds, is located at the northern tip of Kauai on a peninsula 200 feet above the ocean. Big-winged birds fly raucously through the sky above the refuge many making their landing on a small nearby island that appears to be wearing birds. Signage throughout the refuge identifies the area's bird species, including frigates, shearwaters, boobies, and Laysan albatross that nest on the property. The refuge is also the site of a picturesque lighthouse, built in 1913 to guide ships heading to and from the Orient. Its beacon was turned off in the 1970s and has been replaced by an automatic light.
